Original illustrated delegate’s and visitor’s dashboard card for the Bnai Brith Convention District No. 4 in Butte, Montana. The weekend meeting was at the B’nai Brith District Grand Lodge there. An interesting example of Nazi-era protection for American Jews, this ticket was issued with the endorsement of the Butte Chief of Police and the Mayor, who welcomed the attendees with a key to the city and protection from the police. Interestingly, Butte was a Jewish-friendly town from the beginning: Henry Jacobs, a Jewish immigrant from Baden, Germany, who fought as a Confederate soldier at the Battle of Vicksburg, served as Butte’s first mayor from 1879 to 1880; he also served as a school trustee, president of the Hebrew Benevolent Association and president of the local chapter of the International Order of Foresters.
